How Emotional Intelligence and Resilience Drive A Culture of Innovation

Every company wants to build an innovative culture, yet many struggles to do so. One of the key elements that are often overlooked is emotional intelligence and resilience. Emotional intelligence (EQ) covers a wide and powerful swath of skills including cognitive control, focus, grit, empathy, and inspirational leadership. The World Economic Forum listed emotional intelligence as a Top 10 skill to thrive in 2020. Bain & Company found that among 33 leadership attributes--including vision, focus, flexibility, and empowerment--the most essential one was “centeredness,” or the ability to be mindfully present. Put another way, the more emotionally intelligent the leader, the better the performance of their people and their company.

Dr. Daniel Goleman, famed for bringing emotional intelligence onto the world stage, found that EQ determines 85% of a person’s long-term success. Paul Graham, the legendary founder of the world’s most successful startup accelerator, Y Combinator, said: “We thought when we started Y Combinator that the most important quality would be intelligence. That's the myth in the Valley. And certainly, you don't want founders to be stupid. But as long as you're over a certain threshold of intelligence, what matters most is determination.” And determination is 100% EQ. This session will cover examples from Oracle, Amazon, Google, Intel, and others.
